It's about how you can be a fan of the film and also want to read the book it's based on, by Aron Ralston, which chronicles his real-life experience of being stranded and having to cut off his own arm with a blunt pen knife in order to escape. On April 5, 2003, Aron Ralston was hiking alone in Bluejohn Canyon, Utah when he fell into a crevasse. He managed to get his arm stuck under an 800-pound boulder that wedged him between the walls of the canyon. Over the next 5 days (he broke his watch on that fateful day), he attempted to free himself by every means imaginable. But every attempt only made it worse; after cutting off what he could with his pocket knife, he began to cut through his arm muscle and tendons with the blunt side of the blade. Eventually, he reached the bone. And rather than saw through the bone, he snapped his arm and broke it so that it would be dislocated and hung on the side of the crevasse. He had to break his other arm as well before crawling out of what would come to be known as "Aron's tomb". It was only later that he snapped back to reality and figured out that he just cut off his own arm. He then proceeded into the wilderness, hopping on one foot until he found a road that led him into civilization. James Franco gives an excellent performance as Aron Ralston as we watch him as a young man who had everything going for him except for one thing: love. His life is full of it; he's close to his family, has prospects of climbing mountains, business ventures and a reputation as somewhat of an outdoor lover. But he is not satisfied with what he has. He's too idealistic for that. He wants more. More passion, more adventure, more meaning in his life; the kind that you only find when you lose yourself to something else; like conquering nature or fulfilling your ambitions or getting lost in love. And so it goes for Aron Ralston. On one fateful trip with fellow climbers (his friends speculate whether they were on drugs because of the route they took), Aron gets separated from them after getting caught in a rock fall. He is soon lost in the wilderness, unable to solve his compass or figure out where he is. He must use his phone to call help. But the phone doesn't work so well in the area, so he must hike back towards civilization, which is impossible without being seen by someone. He has no food, water or supplies—just a pocket knife that he used before for camping and fishing—so not only would it be very hard for him to escape but also very dangerous. When he does find help, it's too late; the search party has already given up on him after searching for nearly 2 days when they are finally reunited with him in the forest. cfa1e77820
